2035년 소행성과 지우의 충돌 예상 러시아 과학자 주장
"2035년 소행성이 지구를 쓸어버릴 수도 있다"
한 러시아 과학자가 소행성 충돌 가능성을 경고하고 나서 눈길을 끌고 있다
러시아 모스크바뉴스닷컴 최근 보도에 따르면 지난 3일 러시아 상트페테르부르크 응용 천문학 협회(Practical Astronomy Institute)서 열린 소행성 및 혜성 안전 컨퍼런스에서 빅토르 샤오(Viktor Shor)씨는 ''2004 MN4'' 소행성이 2035년 지구와 충돌할 예정이며, 충돌 후에는 지구상에 생명이 사라지게 될 것이라고 주장했다.
그는 "현재 여러 천문학자들이 2004 MN4 소행성을 ''가장 큰 위협''으로 보고 있다"며 "지금까지 이 소행성의 최초 출동은 2028년으로 예상됐지만 최근 계산을 다시 해 본 결과 2028년에는 지구를 아슬아슬하게 비켜나갈 것으로 보인다"고 말했다. 그러나 그는 "만약 소행성의 궤도가 바뀐다면 7년 뒤에 부딪칠 가능성도 배제할 수 없다"고 덧붙였다.
또한 러시아 과학자들은 강력한 소행성이 부딪칠 때 발생할 산사태 해일 시뮬레이션을 구체적으로 제시하기도 했다. 이들은 "직경 500m짜리 소행성이 초속 10~20km로 바다에 떨어지면 높이 200m짜리 해일이 일어날 것이다"고 예상했다. 만약 직경 10km짜리 소행성이 부딪히면 해일 높이는 4km에 이르게 된다. 다만 육지에 부딪친다면 해일의 규모는 10% 수준인 400m로 줄어든다.
과학자들은 "수백 만년 전에 이와 비슷한 소행성 충돌로 지구상의 생명체 중 90%가 사라진 적이 있다"고 설명했다.
